*Takes Backseat, family decisions are up to the mother. (except for moving to the new area)

*Civil servant, Engineer (lends itself to why they moved and also perhaps to some of hi character traits)

controlling, but means well

Has plans for the child, maybe against his wishes

Decision maker (in the house)

Woodsman:
Maybe owns the park


Kid:
Beginning to be frustrated (teen angst maybe)
Wants more responsibility
Reaching a rebellious stage
Bit smaller than other kids but not wimpy
Came from the city had a set group of friends
Maybe he sees the old town from the quarry.

oh yeah

are there any films i should check out? gav mentioned grave of the fireflies and darragh was talking about pan's labyrinth, is there anything else? i could look at them over christmas.
